Overview

This work is an interpretive feature that highlights how settler activities have reshaped the land and waters of Vancouver. These startling changes include the infill of waters east of Main Street to create lands for the Great Northern Railway. As well, the work shows the loss of multiple streams that once flowed north into what is called False Creek. This information was collected for the work by the City of Vancouver, our researcher, and obtained from the booklet “Vancouver’s Old Streams,” by Sharon Proctor. Our team compiled the information together with photographs and stories which were positioned around the map in locations near where they may have been recorded.

This hand-drawn linen map from 1893 forms the background for the work. Tax receipts and newspaper clippings tell the tale of development.

Indigenous fishers spoke of catching the giant sturgeon in the waters that are now Great Northern Way.
