Overview

Located at a critical node in Toronto at the juncture between the well preserved historic character of the Distillery District to the south, and the future mixed use, sustainable neighbourhood of the West Don Lands to the north, “Peeled Pavement” express the ongoing narrative of the West Don Lands that links its rich and complex history to the renewal of life, nature and growth envisioned in the public realm of the future.  This work consists of a series of four integrated sidewalk installations that act as seating elements. Created by seeming to “fold the sidewalk backwards” to reveal its underneath layers, the works include found industrial artifacts from the site cast in bronze, with swathes of glowing light revealed in their absence.
